Policy Gap in Post SABL Papua New Guinea

Policy Gap

Canopy Watch is looking into the future policy measure requirements due to the impact of SABL’s. The effort required to cancel SABLs administratively and the further efforts to halt the logging on each SABL is leaving a Policy Gap in the way of how do customary land owners remediate the impact of extensive logging.

The evidence gathered by Canopy Watch suggests that there has been little evolution, to date, from business as usual in many if not most of the SABLs in Papua New Guinea. Revoking SABL licenses may not have the impact required and further support, and consideration needs to given to this issue.
